Prayer and Action Are Both Necessary

Dr. Philemon Choi

Three million hours of prayer have passed and we are now entering into the fourth million-hour of prayer. We sang a song that said, "prayer can move the hand of God." I will add an extra line. God will revive the hearts of those who pray, hasten their footsteps so they will walk on the righteous path for His name. A person who truly prays will also have actions. There are many examples in the Scripture. As the Jews were about to be exterminated, Esther urged the Jews to fast for her. Next, she entered into the palace and met with the king. Mordecai put on sackcloth and ashes and God promoted him to rank only second to the king of the Persia Kingdom. He brought the Jews out of their danger of extermination, and brought peace to the Persia Kingdom for a period of time. Nehemiah heard about the destruction of the wall of Jerusalem. Its city gate was burned with fire. He prayed to God and God sent him back to Jerusalem. After the resurrection of Jesus, His disciples, believers and a total of 120 individuals prayed on the second floor. In the end they were all sent out and brought changes to the Roman Empire. There are 10,000 believers gathered here tonight. If they really pray, this city will be shocked and experience changes. Paul was challenged on the road to Damascus, "Paul, Paul, why do you persecute me?" He left and prayed. When he got up again he laid his life on the altar. After 30 years of serving the Lord throughout the world, he was eventually martyred and became a testimony for Christ. In his letters he wrote about two things: The first is that a person who truly prays will declare the gospel of peace. In addition, God put to death the hostility through the cross, destroying the wall of hostility between man and God. The city of Ephesus bore much hatred between the Gentiles and the Jews. Paul particularly states that the cross can destroy the hostility.

Hong Kong is filled with much hostility. Where is the hostility? School campuses are filled with violence, with students expressing hostility toward one another. Families and homes have become violent and hostile. I needed to repent before God because I devoted much time to pray for the mainland but spent less time to pray for Taiwan. The blue and green camps became hostile toward one another. We should therefore not only pray, but we should be sent to their midst and proclaim the gospel of peace. Afghanistan needs to rebuild, and certain people from Hong Kong have been sent to participate in their reconstruction work. The Iraqis also need people to help with their reconstruction. May people from Hong Kong also be sent to Iraq. After the September 11th attacks, the United States proclaimed war to sixty nations: "sixty nations in the world are our enemies. In rage, United States responds." This world is torn into two and led to much hostility. May God have mercy and forgive us. "Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn." Not only do we pray, there should be action as well. Those who pray will be sent. We do not only proclaim, for Paul said, "for you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Love as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)." (Eph. 5:8-9). This world needs fruit that bears goodness, and righteousness where unfairness occurs. Hong Kong has about 300,000 believers. There are 10,000 of them gathering here tonight who are from different professions. During prayer, you will be sent to your workplace and become sons of light. You will also be sent to your home where you will bear fruit of light that consists of goodness, righteousness and truth. Tonight we call for your actions. The theme for the previous conference was "Rebuilding this City". The work of rebuilding does not only lie in the responsibility of government officials and those in authority. In those days the 120 believers submitted to the Lord and were commissioned. They brought changes to the Roman Empire. The Scripture says that faith without action is dead. Love without action is hypocrisy. Prayer without action is unreasonable. God must revive the hearts of people and may God have mercy on us.
