11.29 "Man can Pray to God" Gospel Rally

The two "Man can Pray to God" gospel rallies were held at 11:30am and 5:00pm on November 29th. In order to invite more unbelievers to attend the rallies, a special food and testimony event was organized prior to the two meetings at the stadium. We reserved the dining areas at the Sports and Leisure Centre for Disciplinary Services Members and organized the event for the unbelievers at a special discounted price of only $10 per person. The program consisted of a tea snack, songs, and testimonies. The event generated great response. A total of 91 tables with over 1,000 individuals attended the event. The morning food event included participation from many elderly centers. It was the first time for many elderly to attend meetings at the stadium and they were overwhelmed with excitement.

The first and second gospel rally began with a worship session. After the welcoming speech was made, the opening prayer was also made by different pastors. Next, more than 500 brothers and sisters from the praise dance team surrounded the stadium and offered praises to the Lord. It was such a phenomenal scene. With the accompaniment of the percussion marching band, the choir offered their worship which touched many participants.

The first part of the testimony began when Mrs. Chan, executive chairperson of the committee, introduced three guest speakers facilitated by the drama team. The first speaker was an individual recovering from mental illness. He was teased by his colleagues at work and became suicidal. Within moments before taking his own life, God led him to remember his mother who was awaiting him at home to buy food for her to prepare meals. He withdrew from taking his own life. Mrs. Chan prayed that the Lord would be sovereign in the thoughts of those individuals who wanted to end their own life. She prayed that God would bestow new hopes and changes in the lives of these people. The second individual was a young girl who became blind when she was three months old. God granted her a positive and optimistic childhood and upbringing. It brought great encouragement to many of us with healthy vision. Her interview was later made into the "My Passion for Life" video series, introducing the message "your strength will equal your days." (Deut. 33:25b). At the same time, ordinary people like us should offer help to those who are vision-impaired. Jireh Fund has especially published prayer handbooks under the Braille system. A vision-impaired individual came on stage and gave a demonstration of using such prayer handbooks. The third speaker was a mother who struggled with her two sons' addiction to online video games. She prayed unceasingly with other intercessors and her sons finally came to their senses and be set free from internet addiction.

During the morning gospel rally, a sister gave her testimony. She was born with only three fingers. When she was in secondary school she came to know the Lord and learned about playing the piano. God has given her grace and ability to overcome her physical barriers, so not only does she excel at the piano, an opportunity even arose for her to enroll at a university to study music. Two years ago she completed her doctorate degree. She also gave a moving performance when she played "Amazing Grace" on the stage.

During the afternoon gospel rally, we were honored to invite Dr. Joseph Sung, a professor from the Chinese University of Hong Kong's Faculty of Medicine, to share his testimony. Professor Sung shared how he decided to follow the Lord during a Billy Graham gospel rally held at the Hong Kong Stadium 33 years ago. It had not crossed his mind that he would revisit the stadium 33 years later and witnessed for the Lord. Over the past years he focused on medical research and teaching; he also attended many international conferences on medicine. When his career was at its peak, SARS broke out and the medical sector was left not knowing how to handle the crisis. He remembered an occasion when he comforted his medical staff at a restaurant. That evening the staff who sat next to him were certified the next day that they were infected with SARS, and left him feeling that death has never been so close as it is now. During the onslaught of SARS, he experienced the threats posed by the virus, including muscles strains, tiredness, and other fever symptoms. However, he and his medical staff often prayed on their knees, and with the strength from the Lord, they peacefully endured the ordeal. In retrospect, his faith was only about knowledge, but the battle against SARS enabled him to experience what the Bible says in the book of Job: "My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you." (Job 42:5)

After the personal testimonies were presented, a brief video was shown that testified how God bestowed His word to teach the believers in Hong Kong to pray over the past decade. The believers interceded for different crises and disasters, including SARS, street protests on July 1, WTO, avian flu, South Asian tsunami, Sichuan earthquake, etc. These testified that God answered prayers and revealed His truthfulness.

After the testimonies, we were very honored to invite Dr. Philemon Choi, honorary general secretary of Breakthrough, to share his message to our audience. Dr. Choi shared about how Jesus is our Living Water and the Light of our life, and he encouraged participants to make a decision to accept Christ. Not long after he made the invitations for the two gospel rallies, many participants left their seats and walked to the stage to make their personal decision. This was a very touching scene indeed. Although the attendance rate was not high for the two gospel rallies, the decision rate was proportionately higher than expected. A total of 510 individuals made their decisions to follow Christ. We witnessed the amazing work God did in the hearts of his people. The morning and afternoon rally ended with a benediction.
